Pwnagetool 4.1 was released yesterday by the iPhone Dev-Team and is an epic tool for dumping custom firmware files on your iPhone 3G/3GS/4 without having to upgrade to the new baseband (2.10.4/05.14.02). Here’s a complete guide on how you can jailbreak your iPhone 3G/3GS/4, iPod touch 3G/4G and iPad on iOS 4.1 with Pwnagetool 4.1.

Step 1: Download and install the most current version of iTunes from here.

Step 2: Sync your iPhone, iPod touch or iPad with iTunes (PC or Mac) and back up all the data like contacts, photos, music etc.

Step 3: Download Pwnagetool 4.1 from here, and also download the version of iOS 4.1 specifically tailored for your iDevice. You can download iOS 4.1 for iPhone 4 from here, iPhone 3GS from here, iPhone 3G from here, iPod touch 2G from here, iPod touch 3G from here, iPod touch 4G from here and iOS 3.2.2 for iPad from here. It’s best you place these files on your desktop for easy access.

Step 4: Fire up Pwnagetool 4.1 and select your iDevice as shown below:

Step 5: The correct firmware for your device will be detected by Pwnagetool it self as show below:

Step 6: Be careful in this step, when you see the window shown below, click “No”!! Clicking “Yes” will upgrade your baseband to the latest version and you’re doomed with a locked iPhone if you’re already running your iPhone on another carrier for which you’ve unlocked your iPhone for.

Step 7: After clicking “No” (or “Yes” depending on your option), Pwnagetool will now create a custom .ipsw for your iPhone which needs to be jailbroken.

Step 8: Follow the steps given below exactly in the order as they are written to enter DFU mode:

  • Hold Power and the Home Button together for 10 seconds
  • Let go of the Power Button and keep on holding the Home Button for another 10 seconds
  • You’re now in DFU mode if you performed all the steps correctly

Do what you’re instructed to as shown in the screenshot below:

Step 9: While you’re in DFU mode, you will need to restore your iPhone, iPod touch or iPad to the new custom iOS 4.1 firmware file. Fire up iTunes, select the device icon from the sidebar in iTunes. Hold your keyboard’s left “ALT” button (which is the “Shift” key if you’re on Windows) then click on the “Restore” button and once you’ve pressed it, let go of the “Alt” (or “Shift”) button.

Note: Do not click on “Update” or “Check for Update”

iTunes

Now iTunes is going to ask you where the custom iOS 4.1 firmware file is, initially we told you to leave it on your desktop select the .ipsw file from there.

Step 10: This is the part where you grab a coffee, sit back and relax while iTunes is dumping the custom iOS 4.1 firmware file on your iPhone, iPod touch or iPad (iOS 3.2.2). After the whole automated process is complete, your iDevice wil restart and you’ll be jailbroken on iOS 4.1.

Step 11: If you’re relying on a carrier unlock then you can follow the guide posted here at RedmondPie to unlock your iPhone on iOS 4.1 using Ultrasn0w. Once you’re successfully unlocked your iPhone, you’re done! Now just restore all your content which you made a back up of in iTunes earlier. [via RedmondPie]
